The Reiki Precepts are a great guidance from Mikao Usui (the founder of Usui Reiki) in our practice and our daily lives. The practice of meditation being a foundation, ability of understanding emotions, living and reflecting on experiences is fundamental to our well-being and such should be regarded as a way of life and not just seen as a single element ‘reiki healing’. This is often mistaken due to the way concepts are passed down over the years. Various foundations are not always taught as connected practices; including exercise, meditation, breathing…

The precepts remind us to not focus on things that anger and worry us, instead we should be free of these emotions as they can cause ill health physically and mentally. The practice of being humble, compassionate and honest helps us open ourselves for ourselves, consequentially whilst doing so, we open for others around us. Allowing us to breathe more freely. To breathe freely, also releases tension, assists circulation of blood, therefore, helps the lymphatic system and also nourishes all our organs and neurological system.

Below is how I’ve translated the concepts myself, each person will understand them slightly differently and probably give a different translation, but ultimately, as long as one is able to take in the concepts and be able to care for themselves and others, the energy of Reiki will flow freely:

招福の秘法 萬病の靈藥

今日だけは 怒るな

心配すな 感謝くて

業をはげめ 人に親切に

朝夕合掌して心に念じ

口に唱へよ

心身改善: 臼井靈氣療法

The secret of inviting happiness. The spiritual medicine for many illnesses.

Just for today, Anger not,

Worry not, Be grateful

Be diligent in all you do, Be compassionate to people (and yourself)

Appose your hands every morning and evening, memorise by heart and recite by mouth.

We will delve into this topic deeper in due course. Hopefully this has given you a basic understanding of the precepts. This understanding and conscious practice of the precepts is a good foundation for both reiki and non-reiki practitioners, as it is also a way of life and allowing things to flow.
